BSA206 More 1990's Animation.

In 1998 Antz was made by Dreamworks animation and was the second computer animated feature film to be made. Antz was followed by the release of A Bugs Life, which was also in 1998, made by Pixar. Both films are about ant colonies who rebel against the system. Pixar said that Dreamworks stole their idea as Jeffery Katzenberg left Disney for Dreamworks during the time that Pixar/Disney was planning A Bugs Life. A Bugs Life was more successful with the box office, but both films received critical acclaim.

The band Gorrillaz was formed, created by Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett, who created it as a reaction to what they considered were the mindless, empty music videos on MTV. Gorillaz holds the Guinness World Record for most successful virtual band.

Another 1998 film, A Perfect Blue, directed by Satoshi Kon, is a psychological story of a pop star told from different perspectives. The deliberately confusing story mirrors the central character's state of mind. Staoshi Kin was a protege of the Akira (1988) director Katshuhiro Otomo.

In 1999 a lot of well known cartoons were released from the USA. These were; Futurama (Matt Groening), Family Guy (Seth McFarlane) and Spongebob Squarepants (Stephen Hillenburg).

The Old Man and The Sea (1999) was an Oscar winning film made by Alexandr Petrov. It is made in the style of finger painting with slow drying oil paints on multiple layers of glass and was made with the animators working for days and nights without rest. The film is an adaption of Ernest Hemingway's story.

The Wolfman (1999) is a short film by Tim Hope. It's an example of lo-fi approach to computer animation. Hope went on to produce music videos including Coldplay's Don't Panic (2001), as well as designing the animated sequences for the show The Mighty Boosh.

Satoshi Tomioka combined working for commercial animation studios with making his own CG animations at home like Sink (1999). He also made commercials for Honda and Japanese rail.

Pixar made a lot of shorts to accompany feature films to test out new technologies, techniques and approaches as well as to maintain Pixar as the kind of company that gives new directors a chance to prove themselves. Two of these shorts made during the late nineties and early two thousands would be Geri's Game (1997) and For the Birds (2000).

The Man with the Beautiful Eyes (2000) was created by Jonathan Hodgson. It was made non-digitally, using paint, ink and collage. It was informed by his interest in the unsophisticated scribblings of children. He creates visual poetry he calls his "bad animation" - Based on a poem by Charles Bukowski. The film won a BAFTA for best animated short.

In 2000, Dutch director Michael Dudok de Wit made Father and Daughter. He was influenced by Eastern European animation, Tintin and the art of the Tibetan Monks. It is a dialogue free film about a young girl who watches her father row out to sea and never return, every day cycling back to the same spot to wait for him. BSA106 German Expressionism.

German Expressionism in film came about after WW1, after Germany lost the war. Germany wanted to revitalise the film industry and to create a better impression for the country. The German government subsidised the UFA (Universum-film AG), whose studios were the largest and best equipped in Europe. This became Germans golden age of cinema. German Expressionist film lasted from 1919 to 1933 when Adolf Hitler came into power. Unlike other Western films of that period that focused more so on creating realism, German Expressionism distorts reality to create an emotional effect. Expressionism films employed stylised set design, elaborate costuming, shadowy lighting that emphasises bold contrasts of dark and bright highlights and unnatural make-up. The settings are typically distorted and exaggerated, with key themes being madness, criminality and fracturing of identity. German Expressionism was a huge influence in developing the horror genre. They began to tell the story

BSA126 Animation Character - Tim Lockwood, Cloudy with a Chance of meatballs.

Tim Lockwood Tim Lockwood is Flint's father in 'Cloudy with A Chance of Meatballs'. I picked him because I think he is interesting because he doesn't have any eyes that we can see but the animators are able to show us his emotions purely by his eyebrow movements. Structurally, Tim's face is made up of very simple shapes, His eyebrows are a simple rectangle shape that has been given a hair-like texture design to show they are very bushy. His nose is also a rectangular shape with little realistic design apart from the flat rectangular shape. His mustache is similar to his eyebrows, only a slight curve to show gravity and to make his face seem more realistic. It also doubles as a mouth shape in many ways, similar to how his uni-brow doubles as eyes. The head shape itself is basically a conical shape with curving lines which indicates a chin. Tim Lockwood's personality is quite bland and conventional. Therefore, the shirt he wears is a pale, greyish b
