In Japan, Mamoru Oshil's anime Ghost in the Shell, (1995) a budget cyberpunk feature film, was the first anime that had big success in the West since Akira (1988).
It experimented with mixing CG and 2D drawings. It was re-made as a live action film later on.
Henry Selick directed James and The Giant Peach, produced by Tim Burton and based on the Roald Dahl book, in 1996. The film starts and ends with live-action, with stop-motion in between. It won best animation feature at the Annecy International Animation Festival.
In 1992 Mike Judge began his MTV series Beavis and Butt-Head. In 1996/97 he made it into a feature length film, Beavis and Butt-Head Do America. He later went on to produce the animated TV sitcom, King of the Hill.
Bill Plympton made I Married a Strange Person in 1997. He is credited as the only animator to draw every frame in an animated feature film. The Film tells the story of a couples wedding night and the husband's discovery that everything he imagines is true. The film has what is described as "the most bizarre and hilarious sex scene to ever be put to film".
In South Africa, William Kentridge made Felix in Exile in 1995. It is about South African history, society and the nature of memory. It is animated using 30 - 40 detailed charcoal drawings which are altered by rubbing out, altering and re-drawing parts. The film shows Felix in exile in Paris during apartheid longing for home. It has a non-linear semi narrative with surrealist elements and symbolism.
In 1997, South Park was created by Matt Stone and Trey Parker in the USA. The first episode was made using cut out animation, but this is the only one. The feature film, South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut (1999) earned the record for the most swear words in an animated film.
Nowadays, South Park episodes are written, animated and delivered in a week. This is one of the fastest turnovers of a modern animation studio, others usually give themselves more time.
